Recently, mom and I went to see “Fiddler on the Roof,” a gift from a relative for her Christmas. I love theater and musicals especially, but “Fiddler” has never been a particular favorite. I don’t dislike it, it’s just not a favorite. The characters can be a little cartoony, in the wrong hands.

I’m not sure if this performance was especially good, or if “Fiddler” is one that you have to see at a particular point in your life to have full resonance, but it really moved me. The way it portrayed family, Tevye’s faith, the experience of living through stability-threatening change, the complexities of going from girl to woman in a relationship— it’s a complex and beautiful tale. I’m not sure that I’m rethinking my favorites list, but I think I’m likely to feel less “meh,” the next time the opportunity for tickets arises.

So what do you think?
